North Somerset Council Set to Welcome New CEO Mandy Bishop

Mandy Bishop, a local North Somerset native, is poised to become the new chief executive of North Somerset Council, with her appointment expected to be officially confirmed at tonight’s full council meeting on May 13.

Formerly an assistant director at North Somerset Council until 2018, Ms. Bishop transitioned to Bath and North East Somerset Council, where she most recently held the position of chief operating officer. Reflecting on her return, she expressed, “I am honoured to be returning to the council as the chief executive and excited about the opportunities ahead. I look forward to working with colleagues and partners to deliver the best outcomes for the communities of North Somerset.”

Ms. Bishop’s appointment followed a rigorous two-day interview process in May, including panels featuring staff and stakeholders. The position, a non-political role responsible for leading the council’s services and workforce, was advertised with a salary of approximately £170,000 per annum. Final ratification will take place during the council meeting at 6pm tonight.

Council leader Mike Bell warmly welcomed Ms. Bishop, stating, “We’d like to welcome Mandy Bishop as our new Chief Executive after an incredibly strong recruitment process. It’s great to welcome Mandy back to North Somerset Council who I know will be a great asset for our region and brings a wealth of knowledge and experience.”

He outlined key upcoming projects that Ms. Bishop will oversee, including the delivery of the Banwell Bypass, the Metrowest railway extension from Portishead to Bristol, and the renovation of Birnbeck Pier and the Tropicana. Additional priorities include economic growth and progressing devolution efforts, aiming for North Somerset to join the West of England Combined Authority Area.

Ms. Bishop is scheduled to begin her duties in August. The current chief executive, Jo Walker, announced in February her departure to take up a new role as chief executive of Gloucestershire County Council, where she earns an annual salary of £189,000.

The full council meeting confirming Ms. Bishop’s appointment will be held at 6pm in the New Council Chamber of Weston-super-Mare Town Hall.
