North Somerset Council Faces Council Tax Hike Amid Funding Shortfall

North Somerset Council is set to implement a significant increase in council tax as it grapples with a shortfall in government funding. The recently approved budget for the next year includes a 4.98% rise in council tax, with a portion allocated specifically for adult social care spending. This decision comes as the council attempts to address a substantial £16m budget gap.

Council leader Mike Bell expressed concern over the grant settlement, highlighting a shortfall of £37m in government grants compared to the average for English councils. In addition to the funding challenges, the council is facing inflationary pressures and a surge in demand for social services, presenting a formidable financial strain.

The council’s reliance on reserves to prevent exceeding the current year’s budget has further underscored the financial challenges ahead. Despite efforts to achieve a balanced budget for the upcoming year, it is evident that the community will bear the brunt of the necessary measures. This includes fee and charge increases, service savings, and potential cuts in areas such as home-to-school transport and support for looked after children.

Nigel Ashton, leader of the opposition Conservative group, acknowledged the difficulties faced by the administration and expressed apprehension about the future financial prospects for local government. With a projected budget gap of £9m for the subsequent financial year, the council is confronted with the daunting task of identifying further cuts or revenue streams to address this deficit.

The impending council tax hike and the broader financial challenges signal difficult times ahead for North Somerset Council and its residents, as the local authority endeavors to navigate the complex landscape of funding shortfalls and service provision.
