North Petherton Primary School Committed to Ongoing Progress Following Ofsted Review

North Petherton Primary School near Bridgwater is determined to keep improving after receiving a mixed Ofsted report earlier this month. Inspectors acknowledged the school is “emerging from a period of leadership instability” that has slowed progress but praised recent decisive steps taken by leaders to reverse decline, especially for pupils with special educational needs, disabilities, and those who are disadvantaged.

The report highlights five key areas needing further focus: achievement, curriculum development, early years provision, inclusion, and leadership and governance. On a positive note, attendance, behaviour, personal development, and wellbeing were all found to meet national standards.

Inspectors noted that too many pupils, particularly in Key Stage 1, are still struggling with foundational skills like number facts and sentence structure. While early signs of improvement are evident, the school must do more to ensure every child is prepared for the next stage of learning. By Year 6, most pupils achieve outcomes in line with national expectations, but priority remains on improving key areas such as the Year 4 multiplication check and Year 1 phonics screening.

Concerns were raised about the early years curriculum’s ambition, which currently does not fully equip children for a smooth transition to Year 1. Despite this, the school ensures that most Reception children develop essential reading skills, including decoding and blending sounds accurately.

One of the bright spots in the report is the closing achievement gap between disadvantaged pupils and their peers. The school has recently enhanced oversight of funding targeted at disadvantaged learners, even though the precise impact needs fuller assessment. Attendance is also a high priority, with proactive strategies and strong family relationships helping maintain rates at the national average.

Pupils consistently demonstrate exemplary behaviour, embracing the school’s values of kindness, respect, and safety. The school offers a variety of after-school activities—such as football, netball, drama, and coding—and runs a breakfast club to support disadvantaged children’s wellbeing.

A spokesperson for North Petherton Primary School expressed pride in the progress made over five years, crediting committed staff and new headteacher Melanie Lawson for recent improvements. They emphasized that the school is not complacent and is focused on strengthening teaching, raising expectations, and fostering a positive culture where every child can thrive. The school also celebrates diversity as a “No Outsiders” institution, ensuring all pupils feel valued and prepared for future education and life in modern Britain.

Continuous improvement remains central to North Petherton’s mission as it moves forward with renewed focus and determination.
