The UK central government has declined to allocate funding for a vital study aimed at reconnecting the West Somerset Railway (WSR) with mainline rail services. The WSR operates between Bishop’s Lydeard, near Taunton, and Minehead, stopping at key locations such as Watchet, Blue Anchor, Dunster, and Williton.
Efforts to link heritage WSR trains with Great Western Railway (GWR) services in Taunton have a long history, including a trial shuttle service in summer 2019. Most recently, in July 2024, retired Network Rail planner David Northey revealed a new business case was being developed, seeking around £6 million for infrastructure upgrades to make the connection permanent.
Somerset Council and West Somerset Railway PLC jointly submitted a Strategic Outline Business Case (SOBC) to the Department for Transport (DfT) in November 2024. Following site visits and meetings with local stakeholders in March, the DfT approved the progression to a full business case stage. However, the estimated £137,000 needed to complete the full business case has yet to be funded by either government or Network Rail, with no assurances the service will ultimately be approved.

The initiative aims to enhance local transport options, improve access to mainline services for both business commuters and leisure travelers, and support the heritage railway’s continued operation. Restoring this rail link is a key part of Somerset Council’s local transport plan, yet no internal funds are currently earmarked to advance the project.
Rachel Gilmour, Liberal Democrat MP for Tiverton and Minehead, praised the DfT’s willingness to consider the business case but criticized the lack of financial backing: “Without government funding, this confirmation means little. Rural communities desperately need better transport links to access employment, education, and economic opportunities. Political will is required to turn promises into progress.”
Gideon Amos, Liberal Democrat MP for Taunton and Wellington, echoed these sentiments, emphasizing the importance of public transport improvements for rural residents' education and employment prospects. Both MPs pledged continued support alongside the working group campaigning for the project.
The West Somerset Railway remains a valued heritage line offering seasonal services and scenic journeys throughout the region, highlighting the potential benefits of full integration with the national rail network.
