NHS App’s New Family Feature Lets Parents and Carers Manage Care as Easily as Netflix Profiles

Parents and carers can now manage healthcare for their loved ones through the NHS app with the same ease as switching between Netflix profiles, thanks to a new family feature currently being piloted.

This innovative update allows users to apply online to add another profile to their NHS app account, eliminating the need to visit GP surgeries in person. Once registered, users can seamlessly switch between their own profile and those of family members registered at the same GP practice.

The feature is designed to make everyday healthcare tasks simpler—whether it’s booking GP appointments for children or ordering repeat prescriptions for elderly relatives. Since the pilot began, nearly 12,000 users across 68 GP practices have taken advantage of this service, which is set to expand nationwide next year.

Looking further ahead, NHS England plans to enable app access for relatives registered with different GP practices by early 2027.

Dr Vin Diwakar, Clinical Transformation Director at NHS England, explained, “The family access feature in the NHS app makes it much easier for parents and carers to support the health of their loved ones – and it’s as simple as switching Netflix profiles.”

He added that the feature not only empowers families but also reduces administrative work for GP practices, increasing efficiency and improving care coordination. This development aligns with the Government’s 10-Year Health Plan, leveraging digital technology while addressing digital exclusion.

The NHS app already offers services such as repeat prescription ordering, appointment booking, and access to medical records. Previously, setting up access for relatives required an in-person visit to the GP practice, often taking more than half an hour due to paperwork.

Will Palmer, Digital Community Connector at Frome Medical Practice, shared his experience: “Patients are so relieved that they can easily get set up to order repeat prescriptions or see test results for their loved ones in the NHS app. For our practice, it reduces the admin burden and improves efficiency, care coordination, and communication. It’s a gamechanger.”

The latest figures show the NHS app has 38.5 million registered users and continues to grow as it simplifies healthcare for millions.

Professor Nora Colton from University College London emphasized the importance of accessibility: “While AI often takes the spotlight in digital health discussions, making systems straightforward and simple for patients is equally vital. Removing barriers to basic healthcare actions—like contacting a doctor—can significantly improve the lives of the NHS’s most vulnerable patients.”
