Next Steps Announced for Major Somerset Entertainment Venue Transformation

North Somerset Council is moving forward with ambitious plans to transform the Tropicana, an iconic former lido, into a premier entertainment venue. Following last month’s approval of the redevelopment scheme, the council’s Cabinet will soon consider awarding a 25-year operational contract tied to the venue’s extensive refurbishment.

The council’s planning committee approved the application by a 9-3 vote, endorsing the replacement of the existing 1980s indoor venue with a state-of-the-art facility. Alongside new construction, significant restoration work will preserve the historic 1930s promenade building, maintaining the site’s unique heritage.

Construction is slated to begin this summer, with completion targeted for summer 2026. The upgraded venue will accommodate up to 1,000 guests indoors and up to 5,000 people across the entire site, making it a versatile destination for a wide range of events.

This development promises substantial economic benefits, including the creation of 15 full-time jobs and hundreds of part-time positions during large events. Over the next decade, the project is expected to generate approximately £40 million for the local economy.

Cllr Mike Solomon, North Somerset Council’s cabinet member for seafronts and the Tropicana project, commented: “This procurement process has been thorough and open, with our tender launched in September 2024. Cabinet members are now reviewing a report to progress the appointment of a preferred operator. Due to commercial and legal reasons, the operator’s identity remains confidential for now, but we anticipate an announcement later this summer once final agreements are in place.”

He added, “The revitalization of the Tropicana is an exciting milestone—not only for Weston’s seafront but for the wider North Somerset area. It holds great promise as a cultural and economic hub.”

Following the council’s approval and legal formalities, construction will begin promptly, with the new operator undertaking final fit-out work before reopening the venue.

This project is part of a broader initiative supported by a £20 million investment secured by North Somerset Council from the UK government. Alongside the Tropicana, improvements will be made to several landmark sites across Weston, including Birnbeck Pier, Grove Park, Marine Lake, and the High Street shopping area. This targeted funding ensures the regeneration focuses squarely on enhancing community assets and cultural landmarks.
