Jeff Savage, a beloved newspaper delivery man in the Cheddar Valley, has retired after an impressive 36 years of dedicated service. Following in his father’s footsteps, Jeff became a familiar face in the community, known for delivering newspapers across the local villages while accompanied by his faithful dog, Ruby.
For over three decades, Jeff rose before dawn every day, driving his delivery van through remote areas to reach his loyal customers. “My customers have become my friends. I would never let them down,” Jeff shared. “In many cases, I was the only person some of them saw. I especially enjoyed visiting those living in remote villages and hamlets and having a chat with them. I will miss that dearly.”
Before retiring, Jeff ensured a smooth transition by handing over the newspaper delivery business to the owners of the well-known Wookey Hub café and shop. They are now continuing the tradition of delivering newspapers to the local community.

Reflecting on his long career, Jeff said, “Since taking over from my father in 1989, I have hardly had a day off. I’m so used to waking at 4 a.m., I don’t even need an alarm. Even now, I’m still waking early—it’ll take some adjustment. But I have plenty of interests to keep me busy.”
Jeff emphasized his love for the job: “I wanted to retire while still passionate about newspaper delivery. It never felt like a chore because I loved the job and the people. Being my own boss and having Ruby by my side made it all the more special, but it was simply time to step down.”
Throughout his years, Jeff developed close friendships throughout the community. His dedication and warm presence will be greatly missed. Recently, residents of Weare came together to honor Jeff and Ruby by presenting him with a heartfelt plaque expressing their gratitude: “With love and thanks, from all your friends in Lower Weare, Weare, Brinscombe, and Alston Sutton.”
Jeff Savage and Ruby’s loyal service over 36 years has left a lasting impact on the Cheddar Valley community, and their absence will be deeply felt.
