Newly Released CCTV Footage Could Identify Arsonist in Devizes Fire That Killed Woman

Wiltshire Police have released previously unseen CCTV footage that might help identify the individual involved in a devastating fire that claimed the life of Ulla Derrick over five years ago. The fire broke out in a block of flats on Waiblingen Way, Devizes, in the early hours of December 17, 2019, and was determined to be deliberately set.

Ulla Derrick, a resident of the affected building, was rushed to hospital but tragically succumbed to her injuries. Eight others, ranging in age from 5 to 62, were assessed at the scene but did not require further medical treatment.

Shortly after the incident, a 20-year-old local man was arrested on suspicion of murder but was later released without charges. In an ongoing effort to solve the case, Wiltshire Police’s Major Crime Investigation Team (MCIT) has now released new CCTV footage showing a person entering and leaving the flats around the time the fire started.

Detective Chief Inspector Phil Walker, who is leading the investigation, emphasized the importance of community assistance. “This case has never been closed,” he said. “Someone’s actions led to a woman’s death, and we are committed to pursuing justice.”

DCI Walker acknowledged the footage quality is not perfect but urged locals to examine the video carefully. “You may recognize the clothing or the way this person walks,” he said. “Even a small detail that was not disclosed before could be crucial.”

The police encourage anyone with information, no matter how minor it may seem, to come forward and support the ongoing investigation. Contact details for the MCIT MIPP service have been provided by Wiltshire Police.
