New Yellow Warning: Heavy Rain and Flooding Expected Across Somerset and Southwest England

Heavy rain is set to batter Somerset and large parts of the Southwest tomorrow, prompting the Met Office to issue a yellow weather warning that predicts flooding and significant travel disruption.

Covering nearly all of Somerset, Cornwall, most of Devon, and stretching to South Wales and Portsmouth, the alert is in effect from noon on February 9 until midnight the same day. The Met Office warns that persistent downpours during Monday afternoon and evening could lead to flooded homes and businesses, power outages, and widespread travel delays.

Motorists should expect hazardous road conditions caused by spray and standing water, likely resulting in longer journey times. Public transport, including bus and train services, is also expected to face delays.

A Met Office spokesperson said, “Bands of rain and heavy showers will move east across southern England and Wales, with most areas receiving 10-15mm of rain, and some exposed locations seeing 20-30mm combined with strong south to southeasterly winds.”

Residents are advised to assess their flood risk and prepare emergency flood kits and plans. With over 80 flood warnings already issued in recent days, the continued wet conditions highlight the importance of readiness.

“Check road conditions and public transport schedules before traveling, and adjust plans if necessary,” the spokesperson added. “Also, prepare for possible power cuts by gathering torches, batteries, and mobile phone chargers. Stay vigilant for any changes to weather warnings by monitoring local forecasts.”

Being proactive can help minimize the impact of the severe weather and ensure safety during the challenging conditions forecast for the region.
