Chard, a town that shares its name with a vegetable, now boasts a new and exciting addition to its culinary scene - a vegetarian café called Perdida. Located at the Ferne Animal Sanctuary, this café is dedicated to serving up Latin American and Caribbean-inspired meat-free delights, all made from locally-sourced produce.
A spokesperson for Perdida expressed the café’s commitment to homemade, ethical, and flavorful dishes. They stated, “At all of our locations, our ethos remains the same: homemade, ethical, fresh, and full of flavour. Launching a meat-free café at Ferne Animal Sanctuary felt like a natural fit; not only are the Perdida team full of animal-lovers, but we’ve also adopted pets from Ferne ourselves!”
Perdida is on a mission to infuse international culinary influences into locally-sourced ingredients, resulting in a diverse menu that celebrates vegetarian and vegan offerings. The café’s dedication to creating unique and special dishes shines through their incorporation of Latin and Caribbean-American flavors.

The café’s relationship with the sanctuary is one built on mutual appreciation, with both parties expressing gratitude and excitement over the collaboration. The picturesque setting of the café, overlooking the sanctuary’s serene lake, has already garnered praise and enthusiasm from visitors.
The Ferne Animal Sanctuary, situated amidst the beautiful Blackdown Hills, has been a refuge for animals for over 80 years. With a current residence of 300 animals ranging from dogs and cats to rabbits and horses, the sanctuary invites patrons to support its noble cause through entry fees. Meanwhile, visitors can enjoy Perdida for free without having to pay the sanctuary entrance fee, making it both an indulgence and a means of supporting the sanctuary’s mission.
As an added means of support, those unable to visit the sanctuary can contribute to the charity by patronizing its charity shops in Chard, Crewkerne, Yeovil, Ilminster, or Wellington. Whether it’s in-person visits, donations, volunteering, or pet adoption, the Ferne Animal Sanctuary provides various avenues for individuals to support its enduring cause.
Perdida welcomes visitors from Thursday to Monday, mirroring the same opening hours as the sanctuary, from 10am to 4pm.
With its compelling blend of delectable cuisine, scenic ambiance, and a significant cause to support, Perdida offers patrons an opportunity to savor delightful meat-free fare while contributing to the well-being of animals in need.
