A partnership known as Halstock Ridge Vineyard has submitted an application to Dorset Council for the construction of a ‘tasting barn’ and visitor centre at Border Farm, Closworth Road, Halstock. The proposed redevelopment also includes spaces for storage and distribution, a new forecourt, service yard, additional car parking, and the demolition of an existing farm building.
The redevelopment will occur in two phases, with the first phase focusing on on-site wine sales and the subsequent construction of a winery. Currently, the grapes are being processed, bottled, and delivered back to Halstock from another winery.
The tasting and visitor centre is expected to be primarily used by appointment, offering vineyard tours and increased weekend and summer activities. The facility will feature an outdoor area with tables on decking, a greenhouse, and kitchen garden with sales of fruit, vegetables, honey, jams, and chutneys.

The business forecasts a lower volume of site traffic compared to the 1990s when the location was used by Ogarden Produce, which operated 18 polytunnels and frequently delivered field crops to supermarkets. Comments on the proposal, Dorset Council reference 2024/06219, are open for submission until January 21st.
