Several new planning applications have been submitted in Somerset, including proposals for one-bedroom homes for homeless individuals, an apartment-hotel, and a residential facility for vulnerable children. These applications are subject to review and approval by the Somerset Council and offer a glimpse into the diverse housing needs within the region.
Many of these proposals will be evaluated by council planning officers, while more significant or contentious matters will be brought before one of the council’s five planning committees. It’s crucial to note that decisions regarding these applications ought to align with the council’s planning policies rather than local politics, although this isn’t always the case.
One notable application comes from Julian House, a Bath-based homeless charity, seeking to construct four one-bedroom ‘move on’ units in Glastonbury’s Windmill Hill community. Aimed at temporarily housing homeless individuals, these units will provide a stable living environment, allowing occupants to pursue employment opportunities and access essential services. The running costs of this project are anticipated to be covered by Somerset Council with support from Homes England.

Another proposal involves the conversion of Torre Lea House in Yeovil into six new flats, potentially targeting hospital personnel due to its proximity to the town’s hospital. Additionally, there are plans to transform an agricultural barn in Stoney Stoke into an apartment-hotel catering for four people, complete with ample parking spaces.
To address the need for supportive housing for vulnerable children, MJ Residential Ltd. has applied to establish a new children’s home in Taunton, with the site’s proximity to the new Orchard Grove Primary School rendering it strategically located.
These developments indicate efforts by Somerset Council to accommodate the housing needs within the county and reduce costly placements for vulnerable children outside the region. With various applications open for public comment, it’s important for local residents to engage in the decision-making process by providing their input and feedback.
