The Somerset community development project, Orchard Grove, which plans to deliver 2,000 new homes, has received a major boost from the government. It has been selected as one of six key UK developments to join the New Homes Accelerator initiative, aimed at fast-tracking construction on large housing sites nationwide.
The New Homes Accelerator targets nearly 100,000 homes across the UK that have faced delays or slow progress in the planning system. By leveraging government resources and expertise, along with support from Homes England, this program tackles the obstacles holding back these developments.
So far, the initiative has helped accelerate the construction of 36,000 homes by providing targeted planning support and removing regulatory barriers. Additionally, planning proposals for 63,000 homes have been advanced through collaboration with government agencies, contributing to national housing growth efforts.

Orchard Grove, located in Comeytrowe near Taunton, is the South West’s sole site included in this latest round. Along with sites in Guildford, Wigan, Aylesbury, and two areas in London, the program will expedite over 12,000 homes, ensuring at least 25% are affordable.
The Orchard Grove Consortium, formed by housebuilders Taylor Wimpey and Vistry Group working jointly with the South West housing association LiveWest, expressed optimism about the support. They called the government’s recognition a vote of confidence, emphasizing its importance to delivering homes, jobs, and economic growth for the Taunton region.
Launched in 2020, Orchard Grove is designed as a ‘garden community’ consisting of two vibrant neighborhoods connected by shared amenities and generous green spaces. Residents already enjoy access to Somerset’s first carbon-neutral primary school, parks, and play areas. Development is ongoing for a park, bus transport hub, care home, local center, allotments, sports facilities, and a business park.
The community will also feature 100 acres of accessible green space, preserving the natural beauty of the Somerset countryside. This ambitious project aligns with national goals to deliver 1.5 million new homes while creating sustainable, thriving neighborhoods.
