New Pub ‘The Welly’ to Open in Bath Celebrating Local Produce

Bath is about to welcome a new pub next month, The Welly, which promises a fresh focus on local produce—from the scotch eggs to the barley brewed into your beer. Located on Green Street in the spot once home to Belushi’s and the Oliver Inn, The Welly marks the return of a pub to this site for the first time since 2003.

The Welly opens its doors on Friday, October 17, and every ingredient will be sourced from a farm just outside Bath, emphasizing freshness and locality.

Chester Ellis, Head Brewer at Somer Valley Brewing, shared his enthusiasm: “The Welly has been brewing for a long time now—no pun intended! Our taproom will feature our craft beers paired with seasonal small plates, all made from produce grown on our farm near Bath—including the barley in your glass.”

The pub will offer craft beers alongside seasonal small dishes crafted by Head Chef Peter Lewis, formerly of Henry’s Restaurant in Bath and Bunch of Grapes in Bradford-on-Avon, who brings extensive culinary experience to the new venture.

The Welly is the brainchild of the team behind Somer Valley Farms and Somer Valley Brewing, known for their eco-friendly farm in Peasedown St John. The brewery uses home-grown malted barley and water sourced from its own borehole to produce beer supplied to The Welly.

A spokesperson from Somer Valley Farms emphasized the commitment to quality and sustainability: “Almost everything in our beers originates at Somer Valley Farms, resulting in minimal transport distances and maximum provenance—something very few breweries can truly claim.”

The launch of The Welly is a welcome boost for the pub industry in Bath, especially amid the ongoing national decline of traditional pubs, with approximately eight closing every week across the UK as reported recently.

The Welly officially opens next month. Stay updated on the pub’s progress and events by following @thewellybath on Facebook and Instagram.
