New Pharmacy Opens in Wellington to Address Local Shortage Following Closures

Wellington has welcomed a new pharmacy this week, filling the gap left by recent closures that had left the town under-served. Previously relying on just two pharmacies to serve a population of over 16,000, the town now benefits from a third pharmacy following a grand opening ceremony.

Last September, Wellington experienced the closure of two key pharmacies, Jhoots and Boots, both located at the Medical Centre. To address this shortage, Allied Pharmacies has taken over the former Jhoots premises behind the old Luson Surgery on Mantle Street.

Local MP for Taunton and Wellington, Gideon Amos, who officiated the ribbon-cutting ceremony, commented: “Wellington has been without adequate pharmacy provision since Jhoots and Boots closed. I am pleased to support the opening of this much-needed facility after working closely with several companies and NHS Somerset over the past year.”

Amos also acknowledged the efforts of volunteer campaigners and the town council, whose persistent advocacy helped bring new pharmacy services to the community. The MP had earlier campaigned for the reopening or sale of the former Jhoots pharmacy, emphasizing the need for healthcare infrastructure to keep pace with the town’s substantial housing growth.

Wellington is experiencing significant expansion, with plans for 350 new homes on West Buckland Road near the M5 and potential space for up to 718 homes, underscoring the need for enhanced local healthcare resources.

A spokesperson for Allied Pharmacies said: “We are proud to reopen the Wellington pharmacy and restore this vital healthcare service for our community. We appreciate the support from local leaders and residents and look forward to welcoming everyone. Our team is dedicated to providing excellent pharmaceutical care, convenient access to prescriptions, healthcare services, and professional advice.”

In addition to this development, plans for a fourth pharmacy have been approved in the nearby area of Chelston, promising further improvements to local pharmaceutical services.
