New Owners Secure Future of Shepton Mallet Prison

The future of Shepton Mallet Prison as a tourist attraction has been secured as Cove Group, the soon-to-be new owners, have signed a deal to take over within months. The popular tourist attraction, which has been operated by Cove Group since 2017, is being acquired by the firm.

Cove Group has exchanged contracts on a deal to buy the prison after “months of intense negotiations” and has assured that there will be no housing developments within its walls. The firm expressed its commitment to “preserve and enhance” the prison and develop it as a “premier global tourism destination”.

With the aim of restoring the prison for future generations to appreciate, Cove Group plans to invest in the site. Shepton Mallet Prison, the world’s oldest purpose-built prison with over 400 years of history, has been home to infamous criminals like the London gangsters, the Kray twins, and has been featured in documentaries and films.
