A groundbreaking internship scheme in Bath and North East Somerset is opening doors for young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), helping them transition from education to meaningful employment.
The Somer Valley Skills Pathway Supported Internship welcomes 16 to 24-year-olds who have an Education, Health and Care Plan or additional needs. This unique program blends practical work experience with local employers, classroom instruction, and personalized one-on-one support, guiding participants toward paid job opportunities.
Developed by Bath and North East Somerset Council in close collaboration with parent carers from the Somer Valley, the program responds to the community’s call for greater local employment options for young people with additional needs.

Participants spend four days each week gaining hands-on experience with an employer and one day completing educational coursework, including the chance to earn qualifications in English and maths. The internship also offers training in CV writing, interview skills, employment rights, and activities designed to boost confidence and independence.
Councillor Paul May, cabinet member for children’s services, emphasized the program’s positive impact, stating, “Supported Internships are transforming lives for young people with SEND in other regions, and we are excited to bring this opportunity to B&NES. It equips our young people with the confidence, skills, and practical experience they need to thrive in the workforce.”
The program is ideal for young people seeking support navigating their next steps after recent exam results.
An enrolment event will be held at the Hope Centre in Radstock on Thursday, September 4, 2025, from 10am to 3pm.
This initiative is part of the National Development Team for Inclusion’s Internships Work national program, which empowers young people with additional needs to take charge of their futures.
One young participant from a similar Somerset Learning and Skills internship shared, “I now have a full-time job and feel much more confident. I’ve learned many new skills and made lots of new friends, so I’m very positive about the future.”
