The town of North Petherton in Somerset, located near the M5, may soon see the addition of 210 new homes if plans put forward by Gladman Developments are approved. The proposed housing development is planned for the eastern side of Newton Road, joining several other major developments in the area.
Gladman Developments, based in Congleton, has expressed their intention to build the new homes on land north of the Petherton Park School, which is currently used for agriculture. A screening request for the initial plans is anticipated to be decided upon in the coming weeks. Following this, more detailed proposals for the layout and access arrangements will be presented to Somerset Council.
The site is situated opposite three existing development sites within North Petherton, including the Chaucer’s Meadow estate, the Royal View estate, and an additional housing development by West of England Developments. It is noteworthy that a previous attempt by Persimmon Homes Severn Valley to construct 140 homes on the same site was declined by Sedgemoor District Council in 2017.

Although no masterplan for the homes or access arrangements has been disclosed, Gladman has emphasized that the site will incorporate the necessary public open space and undertake drainage improvements to mitigate local flooding risks. Senior planner Amy Aldridge stated that the proposed development is not expected to have significant environmental effects in the area.
Somerset Council is set to make a decision on the screening request in the upcoming weeks, with Gladman anticipated to submit outline plans for formal consultation later in the year. Additionally, detailed plans for a separate development of 45 homes, a 66-bed care home, and a new doctors' surgery at the northern end of the town are also expected.
