New Glamping Site Proposed Near Somerset Heritage Railway

A new glamping site is set to be developed near the East Somerset Railway in Somerset, pending approval from local authorities. The heritage railway operates seasonal steam and diesel services along a short stretch between Cranmore and Mendip Vale, east of Shepton Mallet, preserving part of the historic Cheddar Valley railway line.

David Corp, owner of Merryfield Farm near Cranmore station, has submitted an application to create the site just south of the station. The proposal features six two-bedroom holiday lodges, each accommodating two guests, alongside up to 13 yurts located on the western edge of the property. Visitors will enter via Piers Road, where a new 25-space car park will be built adjacent to a reception block equipped with a kitchen, showers, and restroom facilities.

The development also aims to enhance local biodiversity by including a wildflower meadow and a dog pond on-site. Existing footpaths to the railway station will be improved, with one path replaced by a wooden boardwalk to provide safer and more attractive pedestrian access.

According to a spokesperson from Della Valle Architects, who represent Mr. Corp, the flat terrain from the entrance to the lodges and reception area will minimize landscaping needs, supporting the sustainable diversification of the farm. The project promises economic benefits for nearby communities, creating jobs in areas like cleaning, maintenance, groundskeeping, catering, and reception services, along with construction roles during the build phase.

Simon Bending, general manager of the East Somerset Railway, expressed strong support for the plans, highlighting the potential to enhance visitor experience and railway operations. Peter Thomson, operator of the Cranmore station café, anticipates increased foot traffic and business opportunities resulting from the new accommodation.

Somerset Council is expected to decide on the development within the next three months, with the site potentially opening to guests in early 2027 if the application is approved.
