New homes are still set to be built near Wellington’s new railway station, but the project has shifted hands to a different developer. Bloor Homes South West has stepped in to purchase the land previously secured by West of England Developments (Taunton) Ltd., and plans to build up to 161 homes on Nynehead Road.
West of England Developments originally received outline planning permission in May 2024 to deliver up to 200 homes on the site, which includes the access road to the town’s new £15 million railway station. However, construction on the spine road has been delayed due to required remedial works on an existing section near the Lidl supermarket.
Bloor Homes has now launched a public consultation presenting its revised proposals, which not only reduce the number of homes but also allocate land closest to the station for new commercial premises. The design of the spine road and ‘station square,’ which will welcome passengers and incorporate the original top of the Wellington Monument, were approved separately by the council’s planning committee earlier this year.

According to a spokesperson for Carney Sweeney, who represent Bloor Homes, the new dwellings will feature a mix of family housing, predominantly two-storey buildings with some two-and-a-half storey units in prominent locations. The homes will reflect the traditional style of Wellington, mainly using red brick with buff-coloured string courses. Some rendered properties will serve as visual markers at street junctions and vistas. Parking will comply with council standards, including provisions for visitors.
In addition to the housing, walking and cycling routes will be established along the length of the spine road and the western boundary towards Taunton Road (B3187). Green space remains a priority, with plans to plant over 220 trees and approximately 600 metres of native hedgerow.
Under the Section 106 agreement, Bloor Homes will contribute towards local services, supporting the community’s infrastructure needs.
Bloor Homes is already active in the region, currently constructing 237 homes at the Evergreen Parade development in Bridgwater and seeking approval for an additional 150 homes on Cossington Road in Woolavington. The company is also preparing to begin construction on the Staplegrove urban extension in Taunton following recent permission to widen A358 Staplegrove Road for safe site access.
Local residents have until September 19 to provide feedback on the revised Nynehead Road plans via the Carney Sweeney consultation portal, email, or postal submission.
Following the consultation, a reserved matters application will be submitted to Somerset Council, with a decision expected by spring 2026. Separately, Network Rail is preparing an application for the station, car park, and associated facilities, expected in the coming six months.
While the Department for Transport has yet to announce a definitive opening date for the new Wellington station or its counterpart in Cullompton, the developments mark significant progress in expanding the region’s railway infrastructure and housing availability.
