New Convenience Store to Open in Somerset Coastal Village on May 27

A new convenience store is set to open in the small coastal village of Blue Anchor, Somerset, following unanimous approval from local councillors. The store will operate out of Anchor’s Drop, formerly the Blue Anchor public house, located on the B3191 Cleeve Hill.

Over recent years, the site has undergone significant transformation. In 2022, caravans were introduced east of the car park; by March 2024, the pub was converted into holiday lets. Additionally, new solar panels were installed after a successful appeal in May 2024, ensuring the complex benefits from sustainable energy.

Owner Cara Strom secured planning permission from Somerset Council to convert parts of the old pub — specifically the former games room and carvery — into a convenience store. This new facility will serve essential needs for both holidaymakers and village residents, offering fresh groceries, snacks, and household items.

The store’s opening hours will be daily, from 8am to 10am and 2pm to 6pm. Access will be via the B3191, and new toilets are also planned as part of the renovation. The proposal was reviewed by the council’s planning committee west in Taunton on May 20.

Marcus Kravis, partner of Cara Strom and elected councillor for the Dunster division, addressed the committee personally but abstained from voting to comply with council rules. He highlighted the accessibility features of the site and called out unfair criticisms from prior planning processes.

The former pub site once faced erosion threats until a £3.5 million coastal defence scheme was introduced, protecting the area including the nearby stretch of the B3191 toward Watchet. Local officials, including MP Rachel Gilmour, are advocating for government funding to reopen the road to motorised traffic; it has been closed since January 2023, though accessible to pedestrians and cyclists since spring 2024.

The planning committee approved the convenience store plan swiftly, with less than 15 minutes of debate. The new store is slated to welcome customers starting May 27, adding a valuable amenity to Blue Anchor.
