New Clinic Launched to Support Women with Misunderstood Menopause

A pioneering new clinic dedicated to supporting women experiencing menopause and pre-menopause has opened at Yeovil Hospital’s Kingston Wing in Somerset. This consultant-led service, run by husband and wife team Ahmar and Fatima Shah, aims to address the often overlooked and misunderstood challenges of this life stage.

Menopause is frequently reduced to symptoms like hot flushes and night sweats, but As Mr Shah explains, “It is much more complex. Many women face a variety of physical and hormonal changes—such as dry skin affecting sexual health, bladder problems, and other hormonal issues—that deserve comprehensive care.”

With years of expertise in gynaecology, both consultants are committed to treating the full spectrum of menopausal symptoms to improve their patients’ quality of life. The clinic operates on Thursday evenings at the Kingston Wing, and consultations can be self-funded or covered by private medical insurance.

The conversation around menopause has gained momentum recently, with public figures like TV presenter Davina McCall highlighting the lack of awareness and support for women. Fatima Shah remarked, “Davina has done a great deal to raise awareness. Women should never have to suffer in silence.”

The clinic also offers care for younger women experiencing pre-menopausal symptoms, guiding them through treatment options including hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and non-hormonal alternatives.

Addressing concerns about HRT and breast cancer risks, Mr Shah emphasized that earlier studies from two decades ago were misinterpreted. “The actual increase in risk is minimal, but many women were unjustly frightened from seeking beneficial treatment,” he said.

This new specialized clinic is a vital resource for women seeking expert support and a deeper understanding of menopause and its wide-ranging impact.
