New Car-Free Route Underway Near Somerset School and Leisure Centre

A new section of the car-free Strawberry Line route, connecting communities near the Mendip Hills, is in progress and anticipated to open to the public by late summer. The extension will provide an uninterrupted path from Yatton railway station to Cheddar, with plans to eventually reach all the way to Shepton Mallet’s Collett Park.

The Strawberry Line Society is responsible for the route’s expansion and maintenance and has outlined proposals for a new link near Kings Academy in Cheddar. The project has received widespread cooperation from the academy, multi-academy trust, and the Diocese of Bath and Wells, showcasing a collaborative effort to develop the route.

Funding for the project comes from grants provided by Mendip District Council, Active Travel England, and the UK shared prosperity fund. The initiative aims to alleviate parking issues at the leisure centre and reduce traffic congestion in Cheddar village center.

The new car-free section near Cheddar’s household waste recycling centre and the leisure centre is expected to include a new walking and cycling bridge over the Cheddar Yeo, addressing current congestion and parking problems and providing better access for pupils from the Draycott Park housing estate to the academy.
