A new satellite cancer clinic has opened its doors in Frome, Somerset, providing crucial treatment closer to home for local patients. The Systemic Anti-Cancer Treatment (SACT) Centre, established earlier this year by the Royal United Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust (RUH), has already treated 200 patients.
Previously, many patients faced lengthy journeys to Bath for their cancer care, traveling up to 15 miles each way—taking around 40 minutes by car or over an hour by public transport. Now, residents of Frome and nearby towns including Shepton Mallet, Warminster, and Westbury can receive high-quality treatment without the added stress of long travel times.
Brian Melksham, a patient at the new centre, shared his positive experience: “I’m very happy going to Frome. It’s much more convenient and seeing the same friendly faces from the Dyson Cancer Centre [at the RUH] is very reassuring. The care they give is first class.”

Since opening, the clinic has expanded its services from two to three days a week, allowing even more patients to benefit. Mel Burcombe, RUH matron for haematology and oncology, emphasized the importance of the new centre: “We are delighted to offer care that is not only high-quality but also delivered in a calm, welcoming, and local environment.”
Funding for the clinic was significantly supported by the Bath Cancer Unit Support Group, which played a pivotal role in fundraising efforts. Michael Taylor, chairman of the group, acknowledged the community’s generosity: “This project would not be possible without the dedication and support of our funders and supporters. Thanks to them, we have equipped the Frome SACT Centre with essential equipment, bringing vital treatment closer to home and improving the patient experience across the region.”
A special thanks was also extended to the Richard Oatley Foundation for their generous grant, which helped advance the fundraising campaign.
