New Cafe Bar Set to Open on Historic Northumberland Place in Bath

A new cafe bar is set to open on Northumberland Place, a historic and charming street in Bath. The narrow passage, located opposite the city’s Guildhall, is lined with bars and restaurants. The planning application, submitted to Bath and North East Somerset Council, aims to bring a fresh and vibrant addition to the area.

The application, filed by Scott Martin of Skogen, proposes a change of use and a redecoration of the shopfront. The plans include painting the timber parts of the shopfront light green, installing a new hanging sign, and adding a canvas awning to cover limited outdoor seating in the summer. The goal is to enhance visitors' experience while preserving the street’s distinctive historic atmosphere.

According to the application, the proposed alterations will be minimal, with the internal layout being adjusted to accommodate the cafe bar on the ground and first floors, along with kitchen and service areas in the basement. The existing office spaces on the top floor will be refurbished and retained for continued office use.

As the council reviews the application, neighboring business owner Rosario Bavetta of Rosario’s expressed qualified support for the plans but objected to the proposed outside seating. Rosario emphasized concerns regarding congestion and pedestrian traffic due to the narrow pathway.

The decision on the application is expected by June 9, with the possibility of a listed building consent application being required.
