New 630-Place Primary School to Rise Near Former Weston Airfield

A major new educational development is underway near the former Weston Airfield site in Weston-super-Mare. Airfield Primary Academy, named in honor of the historic airfield, will be constructed by Willmott Dixon Construction Ltd and is scheduled to open its doors in September 2026.

Designed to accommodate 630 pupils, with an additional 103 nursery places, the school will feature 21 classrooms and sports facilities accessible to the public. This expansion comes in response to a projected increase of 400 children in the local area over the next seven years, addressing current oversubscription pressures on existing schools.

Claire Burton, Managing Director at Persimmon Homes Severn Valley, highlighted the project’s importance: “The appointment of Willmott Dixon to deliver Airfield Primary Academy marks a significant milestone in developing a thriving and sustainable community at Haywood Village. This will be the second primary school on site, reflecting our ongoing commitment to enhancing educational opportunities while honoring the heritage of the area.”

Richard David, Director at Willmott Dixon, expressed enthusiasm about the project: “Our extensive experience in education sector projects enables us to deliver a sustainable environment at Airfield Primary Academy where pupils can learn and flourish.”

The school’s innovative T-shaped design incorporates eco-friendly features such as solar panels, air-source heat pumps, insect hotels, and wildflower zones. Plans even include the possibility of beehives, integrating nature into the learning environment.

The Cabot Learning Federation (CLF), which manages 13 schools across Somerset, will oversee the school’s operations. Steve Taylor, CLF CEO, remarked, “We are proud to continue serving the Weston-super-Mare community with education provision for children aged two to 19, fostering seamless learning transitions across all phases. We look forward to collaborating with North Somerset Council on this exciting project.”

This new school promises to be a cornerstone for the growing community at Haywood Village, combining sustainability, heritage, and educational excellence.
