New £155m ‘Super Road’ A303 Dualling Transforms Travel in Somerset

The A303 Sparkford to Ilchester upgrade in Somerset has been celebrated as a standout achievement at the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE) South West Engineering Awards 2025. This £155 million project, undertaken by National Highways and constructed by Galliford Try, received the prestigious ‘Showcase Award,’ honouring it as the evening’s most distinguished infrastructure accomplishment.

This extensive upgrade transformed a 3.5-mile stretch of the A303 from a single carriageway into a dual carriageway, significantly enhancing travel efficiency. The project included the construction of three new junctions, two major structures, and sizeable earthworks, redefining this vital route.

Judges praised the scheme as a “landmark achievement” that epitomizes superior infrastructure delivery. It highlights the ambition, collaboration, and engineering excellence driving the region’s future development.
