Neighbour Blocks Disabled Parking Spot, Faces Swift Car Towing Revenge

A homeowner recently shared her frustration after a neighbour repeatedly parked in front of her mother’s designated disabled parking bay, effectively trapping her inside the car. The story was recounted by Reddit user Penny_b_ on the r/AITAH subreddit, where users seek judgments on social conflicts.

Penny explained that her mother, who became physically disabled following a car accident in 2020, was granted a special parking spot directly in front of their home after overcoming significant bureaucratic hurdles. Despite this, the neighbour accused her of being “inconsiderate” for parking in the bay, claiming it was simply easier than parking in her own driveway.

“I let my mother move in with me after her accident, and we fought hard to secure that parking spot for her,” Penny said. “When my neighbour parked there again, blocking my mother, who struggles with long walking distances, I politely asked her to move. She slammed the door and dismissed my concerns, saying it’s a public street.”

Unable to resolve the dispute amicably, Penny contacted the non-emergency line, which directed her to arrange for the neighbour’s car to be towed. Within an hour, the neighbour’s vehicle was removed from the spot. Witnessing the towing, the neighbour reacted angrily and cursed Penny but failed to justify her actions.

The Reddit community overwhelmingly supported Penny’s decision. One commenter stated, “NTA. Only those with the appropriate disability permit should park in disabled bays. You did the right thing.” Another added, “This spot is signposted for disabled use; the neighbour had no right to park there and should face fines.” Some even encouraged towing the car every time it was improperly parked to prevent repeat offenses.

When questioned about the neighbour’s claim that parking in her driveway was a greater inconvenience, Penny explained, “Her driveway is on an incline, so she apparently prefers to cause trouble rather than park there.”

This situation highlights the importance of respecting designated disabled parking spots and the measures one can take if others misuse them. While friendly communication is the first step, involving local authorities and arranging towing can be necessary to protect accessibility for disabled individuals.
