Nearly Half of Bath Residents Anticipate Loneliness This Christmas, New Survey Finds

A recent survey reveals that almost half of Bath residents expect to experience loneliness at some point during this Christmas season. Alarmingly, 48% of respondents reported feeling lonely during the holidays, with nearly a third (31%) anticipating that their feelings of loneliness will increase compared to last year.

Commissioned by SouthGate Bath shopping centre in partnership with the Mental Health Foundation, the study also uncovered that over a third (35%) of those surveyed wouldn’t know where to seek help if they’re struggling with loneliness or isolation. Equally concerning, the same percentage admitted they wouldn’t feel comfortable sharing their feelings with someone they trust.

Alexa Knight, Director of Policy and Influence at the Mental Health Foundation, emphasized the significant impact prolonged loneliness can have on mental health, especially during Christmas. “The festive season is often portrayed as a time of joy and togetherness, which can intensify feelings of isolation for those who are lonely," she said. Knight encouraged community involvement: “Loneliness is not an individual burden to bear alone; we all can contribute by checking in with others, offering a listening ear, or creating welcoming spaces.”

The survey highlighted several factors contributing to holiday loneliness: 27% of participants said online platforms increased their sense of isolation, while financial pressures (41%), being separated from loved ones (31%), and recent bereavements (26%) were also significant contributors.

In response, SouthGate Bath has partnered with local charities Age UK and Off the Record to raise awareness and provide support for those experiencing loneliness. The shopping centre has donated advertising space to these organisations, featuring a large festive installation directing people to available help.

Nick Howdle, CEO of Age UK Bath & North East Somerset, spoke about the importance of community connection: “Volunteering brings joy and purpose to both volunteers and the elderly. This partnership helps illuminate the power of community and encourages more people to get involved during the holiday season.”

James Brown, Development Manager at Off The Record, noted the particular challenges faced by vulnerable young people, including those living in care and poverty. “Christmas can amplify feelings of anxiety and isolation. We welcome this initiative highlighting loneliness and supporting vital local charity efforts.”
