Nearly 70 new homes are currently under development in Banwell, a small village in Somerset that has earned the nickname “the UK’s new build capital.” Housebuilder Taylor Wimpey Bristol has recently announced it is moving forward with the next phase of construction at the Mead Fields development, adding 68 new homes to the area.
Robert Curry, Sales and Marketing Director at Taylor Wimpey Bristol, shared his enthusiasm: “We are excited to welcome new residents to this next phase at Mead Fields. The development has already been very popular with buyers, and we look forward to the community continuing to grow.”
The new properties consist of three- and four-bedroom homes, each designed with sustainability in mind. Features include solar panels, electric vehicle charging points, and air source heat pumps—modern amenities that reflect a commitment to eco-friendly living.

Banwell, with a population of approximately 3,250 as of 2021, has been expanding rapidly in recent years. Its convenient location—just a 15-minute drive from Weston-super-Mare and 40 minutes from Bristol—makes it particularly appealing to commuters. The village also offers essential amenities such as a local primary school, a GP surgery, and a Co-op supermarket.
In addition to the Mead Fields development, North Somerset Council recently granted permission for 27 new homes near Banwell. However, concerns have been raised by parish councillors about the risk of merging Banwell with the nearby historic hamlet of Knightcott. They emphasize the importance of preserving the open countryside gap that maintains the distinct character of both communities.
Responding to these concerns, a representative from Woodstock Homes, the developer managing the new project, stated: “This scheme involves 27 homes, not 155. The properties will be set back from Knightcott Road, accompanied by open space, landscaping, and sustainable drainage features. Additional open space on the eastern side preserves views toward Banwell Hill and ensures separation between Banwell and Knightcott.”
As Banwell continues to grow, the balance between development and preserving its unique character remains a central focus for the community and developers alike.
