Nearly 70 New Homes Set to Transform Banwell, Somerset – Known as the UK’s ‘New Build Capital’

Banwell, a small Somerset village previously dubbed the UK’s “new build capital,” is preparing for significant expansion with nearly 70 new homes underway. Taylor Wimpey Bristol recently announced it is moving forward with the next phase of construction at the Mead Fields development, which will deliver 68 new residences.

Robert Curry, Sales and Marketing Director at Taylor Wimpey Bristol, expressed enthusiasm about the project’s progress: “We are delighted to welcome new residents to this next phase at Mead Fields. The development has already attracted strong interest from homebuyers, and we look forward to seeing the community flourish.”

These new homes offer three and four-bedroom layouts, designed with modern sustainability features including solar panels, electric vehicle charging points, and air source heat pumps to meet today’s eco-friendly living standards.

Banwell’s rapid growth is driven in part by its strategic location: just a 15-minute drive from Weston-super-Mare and 40 minutes from Bristol, it appeals strongly to commuters. The village offers convenient local amenities such as a primary school, a GP surgery, and a Co-op supermarket, enhancing its family-friendly atmosphere.

In addition to Taylor Wimpey’s project, North Somerset Council recently approved planning permission for 27 more homes near Banwell. However, some parish councillors voiced concerns about the potential blending of Banwell with neighboring Knightcott, a historic hamlet separated by open countryside. They emphasized the importance of maintaining the distinct identities of both communities.

Woodstock Homes, managing the new development, assured that the design respects these concerns. A representative stated, “This scheme is for 27 homes, not 155. The homes will be set back from Knightcott Road, featuring open spaces, landscaping, and sustainable drainage. Additional open space on the eastern side preserves views toward Banwell Hill and maintains the separation between Banwell and Knightcott.”

As Banwell continues to evolve, these carefully planned developments aim to balance growth with preserving the village’s unique character and natural surroundings.
