NatWest has confirmed plans to close an additional 55 bank branches in the coming months, expanding on the 53 closures already scheduled for this year. This move reflects the ongoing trend among major banks to reduce their physical footprint in favor of digital banking services.
Among the branches set to close are locations in Bridgwater, Portishead, and Midsomer Norton in Somerset. Other affected areas include Yate in South Gloucestershire and Chippenham in Wiltshire.
According to figures released by Which?, since 2015 the NatWest Group—which includes Royal Bank of Scotland and Ulster Bank—has shut down 1,409 branches. In 2024 alone, 48 branches are slated for closure, following nearly 20 permanent closures in 2023, as reported by the Mirror.

Despite these closures, customers can still access in-person banking services at any NatWest Group branch. NatWest customers are able to use RBS branches and vice versa, ensuring continued access to essential services.
Additionally, NatWest offers a “mobile branch” service, deploying staff to community locations on designated days to provide essential banking functions such as deposits, cash withdrawals, and bill payments.
Post Office outlets also support banking transactions including cash deposits and withdrawals, balance checks, and cheque deposits, further expanding customer options.
A NatWest spokesperson emphasized the growing adoption of digital banking: “Over 80 per cent of our active current account holders now use our digital services, and over 97 per cent of retail accounts are opened online. Customers appreciate the speed and convenience digital banking offers for everyday transactions. When it comes to more complex decisions, they still value speaking with our skilled colleagues.”
They added, “While digital engagement is increasing, our branch network remains important. We are investing over £20 million in 2025 to enhance customer service, improve branch environments, reduce environmental impact, and develop shared solutions like Post Office and Banking Hubs. We will also support transitions with 12-week Community Pop-Ups in select locations.”
