Natural Infinity Pool in Charming Somerset Town is ‘Largest in UK’ and Free to Use

Tucked away in the picturesque seaside town of Clevedon, North Somerset, lies a breathtaking natural infinity pool offering spectacular ocean views—a perfect retreat during the UK’s recent heatwave.

With temperatures soaring to 38°C this week before cooling to around 27°C over the weekend, many are seeking ideal spots to escape the sweltering heat. Whether it’s a local pool, the beach, or a paddling pool at home, the natural allure of Clevedon’s Marine Lake stands out as a unique destination.

Clevedon Marine Lake is the largest seawater infinity tidal pool in the United Kingdom, covering an impressive 15,000 square metres—roughly the size of two football pitches. This expansive tidal pool draws its water from the Bristol Channel, offering a naturally cool and refreshing place for swimming, paddleboarding, and kayaking in a safe environment.

The lake features gentle steps for easy access and a quaint pathway stretching across part of the pool—a nod to its history as a popular crabbing spot. At approximately two metres deep, swimmers can enjoy their dip without concern for sea creatures beneath.

Nestled among rugged shore rocks and just below the beach promenade, the infinity pool enjoys natural shelter while allowing sunbathers to soak up the sunshine before easing into the cool water. Open year-round—except during high tides exceeding 12.6 metres—the pool is free to the public, making it a much-loved local gem.

Although the lake itself has no onsite facilities, nearby amenities include toilets, pubs, car parking, and easy access to Clevedon’s charming beach. Thanks to its infinity pool design, visitors are treated to uninterrupted coastal vistas, with the town’s famous Victorian pier standing majestically in the distance.

Clevedon Beach stretches for around 850 metres, covered in golden pebbles and framed by low rocky outcrops with commanding views over the Bristol Channel. Visitors can stroll along the beach promenade, enjoy classic seaside treats from a fish-and-chip van, play arcade games, and eventually arrive at the grand Victorian pier.

Opened in 1869, the Grade I-listed Victorian pier extends over 1,000 feet and is renowned for its intricate ironwork and timber panels. Filled with more than 16,000 brass plaques inscribed by visitors and locals alike, the pier has been hailed as “the most beautiful pier in England” by poet Sir John Betjeman. It has won multiple Pier of the Year awards, solidifying its status as a treasured landmark.

Nearby, Hill Road offers an eclectic mix of independent shops—from Gems Giftshop and children’s boutique Muddy Boots to stylish women’s clothing at Pale Blue and Books on the Hill. Unique spots like 67Baristabarber combine trendy cafés with barbershops, while Vintage and Vine, Limehouse, The Clevedon Distillery, and the Fallen Tree Micropub serve up delicious food and drinks.

For those seeking a break from the sun, the historic Curzon Cinema provides a timeless escape. Opened in 1912, this atmospheric picture house features plush red velvet seating and continues to delight moviegoers more than a century later.

Though modest in size, Clevedon offers a delightful blend of natural beauty, cultural heritage, and seaside nostalgia—making it the perfect place to cool off, unwind, and enjoy a relaxed British day out during the summer heat.
