Two separate multi-vehicle collisions on the M5 motorway last night have left several people seriously injured and forced the road to close in both directions between Tiverton and Cullompton. The motorway remains shut as emergency services continue their investigation and recovery efforts.
Devon and Cornwall Police confirmed the crashes were reported at approximately 9:50 pm and 11:10 pm on Thursday, September 18. Both incidents occurred along the southbound carriageway between junctions 27 and 28. According to police statements, the initial collision involved three vehicles and triggered the deployment of an air ambulance to the scene.
Complicating the situation, a second major crash occurred within the traffic queues caused by the first accident. As a result, some drivers were trapped in their vehicles for up to seven hours before finally being able to leave the area.
