MP Champions Outdoor Learning for Children with Special Needs Through Fishing

This week, North Dorset MP Simon Hoare lent his support to a group of schoolchildren with special educational needs during a Fishing for Schools session at Todber Manor Fishery near Sturminster Newton. The event took place on Monday, July 7, where Mr. Hoare actively participated alongside coaches to assist pupils from Yewstock School.

Fishing for Schools is a free educational program run by the Countryside Alliance, providing 10 to 16-year-olds the opportunity to engage with nature and learning through fishing. Founded by esteemed fly fisherman Charles Jardine, the initiative has reached over 4,000 disadvantaged students from more than 150 schools and alternative educational settings across England and Wales in its 18-year history.

The program focuses on developing vital skills such as communication, teamwork, problem-solving, and resilience, particularly benefiting young people who face challenges in traditional classroom environments or have special educational needs.

A passionate advocate for rural activities, Mr. Hoare witnessed firsthand the positive impact of the program and even assisted one pupil in catching her personal best—a mirror carp. He remarked, “It was a lovely way to spend time and a joy to see the children’s excitement and growing confidence when they landed their catch. This initiative is truly wonderful. Long may it continue.”

Tom Maher, the lead teacher of the group, highlighted the broader benefits of outdoor education, noting its value for both formal and special education students.

Charles Jardine, director of Fishing for Schools, expressed his appreciation for Mr. Hoare’s visit, saying, “It’s fantastic to have such a busy MP like Simon Hoare experience the tangible benefits of our unique angling education. Having Todber Manor within his constituency is a great asset, offering young people of all abilities a thrilling opportunity. I sincerely hope more Parliamentarians witness firsthand the true value of angling for youth development.”
