Motorists Face 36-Mile Detour as Crucial Exmoor Road Closes for Repairs

Motorists traveling through Exmoor National Park should prepare for significant delays as the A396, a vital north-south route, will close for extensive resurfacing from May 15 to May 30. The closure at Cutcombe Hill, situated north of Wheddon Cross, is expected to add up to 36 miles to journeys, impacting travel between Dunster, Minehead, Wheddon Cross, Dulverton, and Tiverton in Devon.

Somerset Council has commissioned Heidelberg Materials to carry out this essential road maintenance, with closures scheduled between 9:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. on weekdays. Outside these hours—including the spring bank holiday on May 26 and the Cutcombe market day on May 28—the road will remain open to traffic. Pedestrian access for residents will continue throughout the works, although vehicle access may experience occasional delays. Residents are encouraged to communicate directly with the site team regarding any access concerns.

Councilor Richard Wilkins, portfolio holder for transport and waste services, emphasized the importance of the project, stating, “The A396 is a busy and crucial route for Exmoor. We understand closures cause inconvenience, but safety for workers remains our top priority. After considering night work, we found it unsafe due to steep valley edges. We appreciate residents' patience as this necessary work is completed during daylight hours.”

During the closure, motorists traveling north toward Wheddon Cross from the south will be rerouted along an extensive diversion via Timberscombe, Dunster, and the A39 toward Williton. The route continues along the A39 to the Washford Cross roundabout near Tropiquaria, proceeds south on the B3190 to Raleigh Cross, and then onto the B3224 near Brendon Hill. From there, travelers will head south at Hare Path junction before rejoining the A396 near Dulverton. This detour adds substantial mileage and travel time.

Vehicles approaching Dunster from the south will follow the same route in reverse. While smaller cars and vans might opt for more direct, unsignposted routes through Exmoor, these are unsuitable for heavy goods vehicles and larger vehicles, which must adhere to the official diversion signage.

Motorists are advised to plan journeys accordingly and stay informed about roadworks via Somerset Council’s website. The council thanks the community for its understanding and cooperation throughout this critical infrastructure upgrade.
