Middlewick Farm Shop and Café, a well-loved destination east of Glastonbury, Somerset, is set to increase its parking capacity after receiving planning approval from Somerset Council. Operated by the Barker family, the farm shop has been serving locals and visitors alike since the height of the coronavirus pandemic.
Located on Wick Lane, the site currently offers 19 car parking spaces. However, during busy periods, vehicles often overflow onto the narrow roadside verges, causing congestion and safety concerns. To address this, the Barker family applied before Christmas for permission to create eleven additional car spaces and two dedicated motorcycle spots.
The council has approved the proposals, with construction expected to start within weeks. The expansion will include the planting of new trees and hedgerows, enhancing biodiversity around the site. Accessible parking and cycle racks are already in place, prioritizing convenience and sustainable travel options.

Orme Architecture, representing the applicant, highlighted the importance of the project: “The farm shop is a vital part of the local rural economy, providing access to locally produced goods. The current car park is insufficient during peak times, leading to unsafe parking practices along Wick Lane. The planned expansion offers a modest yet effective solution that boosts safety, supports business growth, and preserves the rural character through sensitive landscaping.”
Local councillor Ewan Cameron, representing the Glastonbury division, welcomed the move, saying, “This farm shop attracts a lot of visitors, and the increased parking will make access safer for everyone.”
The council approved the plans through delegated powers, reflecting the application’s straightforward nature. The farm shop and café will remain open throughout the construction phase, ensuring uninterrupted service to its customers.
