Months of Disruption Expected as New Toucan Crossing Construction Begins in Bridgwater

Construction has begun on a new pedestrian and cyclist crossing over Ascot Drive, a busy connector road in north-east Bridgwater, prompting warnings of up to two months of traffic disruption for motorists.

Ascot Drive serves as a critical route linking the A38 Bristol Road to residential areas including the Westminster Walk estate by Persimmon Homes Severn Valley and the Evergreen Parade estate, currently under development by Bloor Homes South West. This road crosses the Bristol to Exeter railway line and functions as a major commuter artery to both Bridgwater town centre and the M5 motorway via the Dunball roundabout.

Somerset Council commenced work on April 27 to install a toucan crossing near the Bristol Road roundabout, with temporary traffic lights set to manage traffic from May 5 until the project’s expected completion on June 26. Toucan crossings, designed for both pedestrians and cyclists, are wider and more accommodating than traditional pedestrian-only pelican crossings.

The new crossing will replace an unmarked crossing east of the roundabout, enhancing connectivity with existing pedestrian and cycle routes along Kings Drive extending to the A39 Bath Road. In addition, it will link up with current cycle paths on Bristol Road, improving access to the Express Park commercial area and routes northward towards the Dunball roundabout and the planned ‘gigafactory’ site. This development aligns with the ‘purple route’ designated in Bridgwater’s Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan (LCWIP).

Additional infrastructure upgrades are planned for the area, including new pedestrian and cycling links on The Leggar near local retail outlets such as Sainsbury’s, along with safety enhancements to the Cross Rifles roundabout, where the A38 and A39 intersect.

Furthermore, the council’s highways contractor will undertake repairs to the Bristol Road roundabout, including kerb replacements, and will conduct night-time resurfacing on the dual carriageway north of the junction to improve driving conditions.

Councillor Richard Wilkins, portfolio holder for transport and waste services, highlighted the importance of these safety improvements, stating, “These works represent the first in a series of initiatives to expand Bridgwater’s active travel network, making it easier and safer for people to walk, cycle, and use mobility devices around town.”

While disruption during peak hours is expected, the council has committed to keeping the road open for the majority of the construction period, though temporary restrictions will be necessary at times.

Further information about ongoing roadworks in Bridgwater is available on the Somerset Council website. Details about the Cross Rifles roundabout upgrades and The Leggar improvements remain under development, with timing to be confirmed as plans progress.
