‘Monster’ paedophile who ‘stole’ victim’s childhood is jailed for 27 years

Philip Garrett, 70, of Berrow near Burnham-on-Sea, has been sentenced to 27 years in prison after pleading guilty to multiple non-recent sexual offences against two children. The Taunton Crown Court handed down the sentence on March 5, following a thorough police investigation triggered by one of the victims coming forward.

Garrett was convicted of 19 offences including rape and is now registered on the Sex Offenders’ Register for life. Alongside his prison term, he is subject to a Sexual Harm Prevention Order and an indefinite restraining order barring any contact with his victims.

The two victims, whose identities remain protected for legal reasons, have been supported throughout the investigation by safeguarding services. Both read powerful victim impact statements during the trial, revealing the lasting psychological scars caused by Garrett’s abuse.

One victim said, “You will always be the abuser, the monster who stole my childhood. I never understood why I was subjected to such horrendous torture. My innocence, dignity, and choices were all taken from me.” The other victim shared, “The abuse affected my education and my ability to trust or enjoy intimate relationships. You took that away from me.”

Detective Constable Michelle Hewitt, lead investigator from the specialist child protection team, praised the victims’ courage. “Their bravery in speaking out has been vital for delivering justice. This conviction sends a strong message that abuse will never be tolerated and every victim deserves to be heard and supported, no matter how long ago the offences occurred.”

The case highlights the importance of victims coming forward and the ongoing support available to survivors of abuse.
