Minehead Town Council has officially taken over the management of several public parks and gardens across the town, marking a major milestone in locally-led stewardship of key community assets.
The handover took effect on Thursday, May 1, and was celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at Blenheim Gardens, led by Councillor Craig Palmer, Minehead’s mayor. This event signified the operational transfer of maintenance duties, even as formal land registry documentation is being finalized.
Town clerk Ben Parker highlighted the significance of this change: “This is an important moment for Minehead. Our focus during the first year will be on seamlessly integrating the amenities services previously managed by Somerset Council with those of the Town Council. We have worked hard to minimize any disruption to residents’ enjoyment of these spaces. In the coming weeks, you will see our presence reflected through updated signage and new contact details throughout the parks and gardens.”

The transfer comes as Minehead gears up for the upcoming 80th anniversary of VE Day and the busy spring maintenance period. A new section dedicated to these green spaces will soon be added to the Minehead Town Council website, providing residents with information about the areas under council control, maintenance schedules, and contact information for inquiries.
This initiative reflects the council’s wider goal to enhance the quality, accessibility, and community focus of Minehead’s parks and gardens for both residents and visitors.
