A tragic school bus accident in Somerset has claimed the life of a 10-year-old boy. The incident occurred on Thursday, July 17, when a coach carrying up to 70 people veered off the A396 at Cutcombe Hill, between Wheddon Cross and Timberscombe, around 3 p.m. The vehicle flipped onto its roof and slid 20 feet down an embankment.
Emergency services, including police, fire, ambulance teams, and multiple air ambulances, responded swiftly to the scene. Two children were airlifted to Bristol Royal Hospital for Children, where they remain in critical condition. In total, Avon and Somerset Police confirmed that four children and three adults are currently hospitalized in Somerset.
Formal identification of the deceased boy has yet to take place, with specially trained officers providing support to his grieving family. Recovery of the overturned bus is ongoing and described as “complex,” with the road closure expected to last for a significant period.

Chief Superintendent Mark Edgington expressed gratitude to the 24 volunteers from Exmoor Search and Rescue for their vital first aid and rescue efforts, as well as the staff at the Rest and Be Thankful pub at Wheddon Cross, which served as a rest center for those affected. He also acknowledged Minehead Middle School for its support and communication with parents and the school community during this difficult time.
Authorities are appealing for witnesses or anyone with dashcam footage related to the crash to contact Avon and Somerset Police at 101, referencing incident number 5225201782. Superintendent Edgington urged the public to avoid speculation on social media to prevent further distress to the victims, their families, school staff, and the driver.
Beacon Education Multi-Academy Trust, which oversees Minehead Middle School, released a statement expressing deep sadness over the loss of a pupil and reassuring their commitment to supporting all those affected. The trust confirmed serious injuries among other passengers and affirmed close cooperation with emergency services and authorities.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer issued a heartfelt statement, extending his condolences to the bereaved family and thanks to the emergency workers managing the response. He acknowledged the profound impact of the tragedy on the community and pledged ongoing support.
