Rachel Gilmour, the MP for Tiverton and Minehead, was visibly emotional outside Minehead Middle School after a tragic coach crash claimed the life of a 10-year-old pupil and injured 21 others. The coach, carrying nearly 70 children and chaperones returning from a trip to Exmoor Zoo, overturned on the A396 on July 17, sliding 20 feet down a steep embankment.
The incident has deeply shaken the local community, with tributes pouring in for the young victim. Two children were airlifted to Bristol Children’s Hospital with serious injuries, while four additional children and three adults remain hospitalized.
Speaking to the press, Ms. Gilmour shared her heartbreak, saying, “When you become an MP, you don’t expect to face tragedies like this. We focus on public services and community issues, but moments like these remind me of the true weight of being a community representative.”

She described offering comfort and support to families at the school alongside headteacher Laura Mackie. “I’ve been giving a lot of hugs today,” she said. “I spoke with a father whose daughter was on the coach. There’s nothing I can do to undo this, but my role is to support in every way I can.”
Ms. Gilmour confirmed efforts are underway with Somerset Council to secure government funding for ongoing support and therapies for those affected. “Minehead is a tight-knit community that pulls together in times of crisis. We’re focused on doing everything possible to help these children and their families through recovery.”
Emergency services continue to investigate the crash, with Chief Superintendent Mark Edgington praising volunteers from Exmoor Search and Rescue and local businesses providing aid. The road remains closed as the vehicle is recovered, and police urge witnesses to come forward while avoiding speculation online to spare further distress to the victims’ families and school community.
“Our thoughts remain with everyone touched by this heartbreaking event,” added Mr. Edgington.
