Minehead Bus Crash: Community Unites in Major Fundraising Effort

In the wake of the tragic coach crash near Exmoor, the West Somerset community has come together with a powerful fundraising campaign aimed at providing immediate relief and long-term aid to those impacted.

The accident occurred on Thursday, July 17, when a coach carrying around 70 passengers—including many pupils from Minehead Middle School—veered off the road. In response, the Somerset Community Foundation (SCF) launched the Together for West Somerset Appeal, dedicated to supporting families, children, and staff affected by the incident.

Funds raised through this appeal will assist individuals dealing with injuries, psychological trauma, and financial challenges resulting from the crash. The donations will also bolster local organizations delivering vital practical and emotional support to the community.

Justin Sargent, CEO of Somerset Community Foundation, expressed deep concern: “The events of Thursday are devastating for the children, families, and wider community in Minehead, Exmoor, and across Somerset. We recognize the profound immediate and lasting impact this tragedy will have on so many lives.”

He continued, “The Together for West Somerset Appeal is our way to raise crucial funds for those directly affected, as well as the broader community. We believe people will want to contribute to easing the suffering and stand united with those whose lives have changed overnight.”

This initiative is a coordinated effort involving Somerset Council, Somerset NHS, local schools, the National Emergencies Trust, the Fundraising Regulator, and The Charity Commission. A dedicated Minehead Community Response Fund will oversee the allocation and management of donations.

Councillor Bill Revans, leader of Somerset Council, conveyed his solidarity: “Thursday’s tragedy is unimaginable. Our thoughts are with everyone affected. We appreciate the Somerset Community Foundation’s leadership in coordinating the appeal and community donations. We are confident they will ensure funds quickly reach those in urgent need and support the community for years to come.”

In addition, a GoFundMe appeal created by local resident Bobbie Rammond has raised over £25,000 to assist the community and is also managed by the Somerset Community Foundation. Other notable fundraisers include Hinkley Point C nuclear power station, which has contributed more than £14,300, and Minehead Middle School with over £2,200 raised to benefit affected pupils.

Donations to the Together for West Somerset Appeal can be made online at www.somersetcf.org.uk/appeal. Cheques should be payable to Somerset Community Foundation, with ‘Together for West Somerset’ written on the reverse, and sent to Yeoman House, The Bath & West Showground, Shepton Mallet, Somerset, BA4 6QN.
