‘Mind-blowing’ Detective Drama That ‘Gets Better and Better’ Filmed Near Somerset

Fans of detective dramas and true crime enthusiasts are being urged to watch the compelling ITV drama series, A Confession, filmed near Somerset and available to stream for free on ITVX.

The six-part series features a stellar cast, including Martin Freeman, Imelda Staunton, and Siobhan Finneran. It centers on Detective Superintendent Steve Fulcher, played by Freeman, who leads an intense manhunt after a young woman mysteriously vanishes.

Based on the true story of 22-year-old Sian O’Callaghan, who disappeared from Swindon, Wiltshire, in March 2011, the drama follows the harrowing investigation that unfolded after her disappearance. Five days later, Sian’s body was discovered near Uffington in Oxfordshire. The killer, taxi driver Christopher Halliwell, now serving a life sentence, is portrayed by Joe Absolom, known for his roles in Doc Martin and Emmerdale.

Filmed on location in Wiltshire, near Somerset, and the Home Counties, the series was directed by Paul Andrew Williams, known for his work on Broadchurch and Strangers. Out of respect for the families affected, the production deliberately avoided shooting in the exact locations where the real events occurred.

Viewers have praised the series on IMDb for its powerful storytelling and emotional depth. One review called it “a very hard-hitting, mind-blowing series” that not only delves into the crime and investigation but also portrays the pain experienced by the victim’s family and the toll on the investigating officers’ lives. Another described it as “an amazing and very important British drama,” applauding the performances of the entire cast.

The latter episodes have been highlighted as particularly intense, with viewers noting that the gripping camera work adds to the realism. Many called it an “edge-of-the-seat” drama that evokes strong emotions, with one fan revealing the series brought them to tears and elicited deep sympathy for Fulcher and his family.

Writer Jeff Pope explained the choice not to film in the actual locations connected to the case, citing sensitivity to those affected. He told Radio Times, “We felt there would be friends and family of Sian walking down the High Street and there we are, recreating the moment when she gets into Halliwell’s car. The decision not to film there was at least partly because of sensitivity.”

A Confession is now available to stream on ITVX and is highly recommended for those who appreciate true crime and emotionally powerful detective dramas.
