The world-renowned Flying Scotsman steam engine has arrived in Somerset for a limited summer engagement. Operating on the picturesque West Somerset Railway, the iconic train is offering unique rides between Bishops Lydeard and Minehead on selected dates throughout July.
Having arrived on Saturday, the Flying Scotsman will remain in Somerset until July 14, delighting steam enthusiasts and history buffs alike. Despite high demand and many journeys already fully booked, there are still opportunities to secure seats on this historic locomotive.
The Flying Scotsman began its Somerset runs on June 29 and 30, with additional trips scheduled for July 1, 2, 8, 9, 10, 11, and 12.

Originally built in Doncaster for the London and North Eastern Railway, this legendary A1 class locomotive was designed by Sir Nigel Gresley. It etched its place in history by completing the first non-stop London to Edinburgh run in 1928, taking just eight hours. In 1934, it became the UK’s first engine to reach 100 mph during a test run, according to Somerset Live.
After retiring from regular service in 1963, the Flying Scotsman underwent a meticulous £4.2 million restoration completed in 2015, ensuring it remains fully operational for generations to come.
Stuart Nelhams, one of the train’s drivers, remarked, “Driving steam locomotives is always special, but piloting one that is a national icon feels extraordinary. The Flying Scotsman has truly become a bit of a pop star—its name is known far and wide.”
Kerry Noble, General Manager of West Somerset Railway, said, “Having this iconic locomotive here is an honour, although it comes with a lot of operational challenges. We’re mindful of current living costs and have worked hard to offer a range of ticket options to make it accessible for everyone.”
On days when the Flying Scotsman is running, trains will bypass all intermediate stations between Bishops Lydeard and Minehead, which will be closed to non-ticket holders to manage capacity and ensure safety.
Regular service will resume on Thursday, July 3, and continue on July 5 and 6. Tickets and reservations are available via the West Somerset Railway’s website or by calling 01643 870103, Monday to Friday between 9:30 am and 4:30 pm.
