Hidden Garden Day Nursery in Midsomer Norton, Somerset, has been highly commended in its recent Ofsted inspection for providing an environment that fosters children’s curiosity, confidence and readiness for their next stage of education.
Caring for children aged between one and four, the nursery was praised for creating a welcoming and secure atmosphere where children readily engage and learn. Inspectors noted that children “arrive happily and feel secure from the start of their day,” highlighting how they play cooperatively and share ideas during their activities.
The report emphasised the positive behaviour of the children, stating they “behave kindly and understand simple rules,” and move calmly through the daily routine with support from clear explanations and visual cues.

Staff were recognised for their patient guidance and consistent routines that help children manage their emotions effectively. This nurturing approach assures children feel safe and trust that staff will support them when needed.
A key strength identified was the children’s achievement across all areas of learning. Through a variety of experiences, they develop vital early communication, physical and social skills. The report praised children’s resilience when facing challenges and their positive responses to gentle encouragement, equipping them with the knowledge and skills essential for future learning.
The nursery’s collaboration with families was also highlighted as exemplary. Families are warmly welcomed and provide valuable insights about their children, which staff use to tailor learning experiences that reflect children’s individual interests and backgrounds.
Children benefit from a rich programme of wider opportunities including outdoor learning, sensory activities and visits within the community. These experiences broaden their understanding of the world and foster a strong sense of belonging.
Inspectors observed that children’s good behaviour extends to listening attentively during group sessions and developing independence in day-to-day tasks.

Hidden Garden was rated as strong in achievement, behaviour and attitudes, curriculum and teaching, and inclusion, while welfare and wellbeing, along with leadership and governance, met the expected standard.
