Hidden Garden Day Nursery in Midsomer Norton, Somerset, has received commendation in its latest Ofsted inspection, highlighting its success in nurturing children’s curiosity, confidence, and preparedness for the next phase of their education.
Catering for children aged between one and four, the nursery was described by inspectors as a place where children “arrive happily and feel secure from the start of their day.” They noted that the children enjoy playing alongside friends, sharing ideas, and learning to cooperate through shared experiences.
The report emphasised the children’s positive behaviour, stating that they behave kindly, understand simple rules, and transition calmly between activities with support from visual cues and clear explanations. It highlighted the staff’s role in helping children manage their emotions through patient guidance and consistent routines, fostering a safe environment where children feel supported.

A particular strength identified was the children’s achievement across all areas of learning. The inspectors observed that children develop early communication, physical, and social skills through diverse experiences. They build resilience when faced with challenging activities and respond well to gentle guidance, acquiring the knowledge and skills necessary for future learning.
The nursery’s approach to working with families was also praised. Families are warmly welcomed, contributing valuable insights that assist staff in understanding each child’s background. This understanding informs planning, allowing experiences to reflect children’s interests and lived realities.
Children benefit from a wide range of opportunities, including outdoor learning, sensory activities, and community visits, which broaden their understanding of the world and strengthen their sense of belonging within their community.
Inspectors commended the nursery for the well-behaved nature of its children, who listen attentively during group sessions and are increasingly independent in daily routines. Attendance is carefully monitored, with staff working closely alongside families to ensure consistent nursery participation.
Nursery manager Abby Gilson expressed pride in the inspection results, saying: “We are absolutely delighted with the outcome of this inspection. Ofsted’s current reporting framework does not use one-word overall judgments. Instead, the nursery was assessed as operating at a strong standard in four of six categories: achievement, behaviour and attitudes, curriculum and teaching, and inclusion. It met the expected standard in the areas of welfare and wellbeing, and leadership and governance.
