Hidden Garden Day Nursery in Midsomer Norton has received commendation in its latest Ofsted inspection for its outstanding approach to early years education. Catering to children aged between one and four, the nursery was recognised as an environment where children exhibit “curiosity, confidence and readiness for the next stage of their education.”
The inspection report highlighted the nursery’s welcoming atmosphere, stating, “Children arrive happily and feel secure from the start of their day. They play alongside friends, share ideas, and learn to cooperate during shared experiences.”
Children were observed to demonstrate kind behaviour and an understanding of simple rules. They transition calmly between activities, supported by visual prompts and clear explanations. Staff at Hidden Garden also assist children in managing their emotions through patient guidance and consistent routines, ensuring a sense of safety and trust.

A key strength noted was children’s achievement across all learning areas. “Children develop early communication, physical, and social skills through varied experiences,” the report stated. It further emphasised how children build resilience when faced with challenging activities and respond positively to gentle guidance, equipping them with the necessary skills for future learning stages.
The nursery’s strong partnership with families was also praised. Families are warmly welcomed and encouraged to share valuable insights about their children’s backgrounds, allowing staff to tailor experiences that reflect individual interests and experiences. Children benefit from diverse opportunities, including outdoor learning, sensory activities, and community excursions, which enhance their understanding of the world and foster a sense of belonging.
Inspectors noted the well-mannered nature of the children, who listen attentively during group sessions and are gaining independence in daily tasks. Attendance is carefully monitored, with staff collaborating closely with families to promote consistent nursery attendance.
Nursery manager Abby Gilson expressed pride in the team’s efforts, saying, “We are absolutely delighted with the outcome of this inspection. Ofsted’s current evaluation framework eschews single-word judgements, instead assessing institutions across various subcategories. Hidden Garden was rated as operating at a strong standard in achievement, behaviour and attitudes, curriculum and teaching, and inclusion. The nursery met the expected standard in welfare and wellbeing, as well as leadership and governance.
