The Metropolitan Police in London have announced a renewed investigation into the 1999 murder of television presenter Jill Dando, following a detailed inquiry by the Daily Mirror that associates the killing with Milorad Ulemek, a notorious Serbian assassin.
Jill Dando, a prominent BBC presenter known for shows such as Crimewatch and appeals for Kosovan refugees, was fatally shot on her doorstep in London. Over two decades later, new evidence has led police to re-examine aspects of the case, centred on Ulemek’s potential involvement.
The police confirmed their ongoing work with enhanced CCTV technologies to analyse footage from Putney Bridge underground station, where a previously unidentified man, referred to as ‘Man X’, was seen near the time of the murder. This footage, originally recorded in 1999, is now being digitally enhanced to provide greater clarity.

The Daily Mirror’s investigation established photographic comparisons indicating that Ulemek and ‘Man X’ bear striking similarities. Witnesses who observed a man in a suit swiftly moving along Jill Dando’s street have recognised Ulemek from these images as potentially the same individual.
Jill Dando had connections to Weston-super-Mare and Plymouth and was a leading BBC figure when she was tragically killed. After her murder, Barry George was initially convicted but later acquitted in 2008 following a retrial.
The theory that Dando’s murder was an assassination ordered by Serbian operatives has persisted. Ulemek, a former French Foreign Legionnaire and leader of paramilitary units implicated in the Yugoslav civil war, stands as the prime suspect in this theory. He is currently imprisoned in Serbia for involvement in high-profile political assassinations.
Police investigations prior to this recent focus had dismissed key eyewitness testimonies that pointed toward ‘Man X’. However, renewed scrutiny of statements from neighbourhood witnesses and a motorist who saw a man fleeing the scene has given fresh weight to the notion that Ulemek was present.
At the time of Jill Dando’s death, the UK was engaged in military actions against Serbia, and she had recently hosted a BBC appeal supporting Kosovan refugees, raising suspicions about a politically motivated killing. A call claiming responsibility was made to the BBC shortly after the shooting, citing retaliation for NATO air strikes.
The Metropolitan Police have emphasised that over 27 years, advances in forensic science and technology have enabled continued reviews of this cold case. The use of improved CCTV enhancement techniques marks a significant development in their pursuit of justice for Jill Dando.
