Met Office Issues Yellow Wind Warning for Christmas Day Across Somerset

The Met Office has issued a yellow wind warning for Christmas Day that affects multiple locations across Somerset, alongside parts of Devon, Cornwall, and some areas of Wales. Although a white Christmas remains unlikely, strong winds could disrupt travel plans and daily activities on December 25.

Starting at 4am and lasting until 11:59pm, the warning highlights gusty easterly to northeasterly winds, with peak gusts ranging between 45-55 mph widely, and potentially reaching 55-65 mph along exposed coasts and western hills. These conditions are expected to bring large waves along coastlines, possible power outages, and travel disruptions.

In Somerset, the yellow warning covers numerous towns, although Bath, Taunton, Bridgwater, Yeovil, Chard, and Glastonbury are notably excluded. Despite this, some of these areas still face the risk of strong wind gusts.

Public transport is likely to be affected, though most services are typically limited on Christmas Day. Residents are advised to remain cautious when outdoors due to hazardous weather conditions.

Concurrently, the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has issued a cold weather health alert for the South West, warning that the low temperatures pose increased risks to vulnerable individuals. This cold health warning activates at 6pm on Christmas Day and continues until midday on December 27, possibly increasing demand on health and social care services.

The Met Office emphasizes the unusual wind direction may exacerbate disruptions to transport and power supplies, urging people to stay updated and prepared during the festive period.
